US Route 89

THE US ROUTE 89 PROJECT

US Route 89 is for those people who love driving the two-lane highways that keep them close to the edge of the road so they can see the land at a leisurely pace. We think nothing of stopping along the way to admire the view and smell the fresh air. We seek out unique places to eat where the special of the day depends on what’s in season at the nearby farm. We have a passion for a trip on a “slow road.” This exhibition and book will make the road trip more complete.

FINE ART PRINTS EXHIBITION & PORTFOLIO
Photographer James CowlinFocusing on the grandeur of the West, both great and small, I am producing a portfolio of fine art photographic prints depicting the landscape and majestic scenery encountered along US Route 89. I will be photographing and writing about the cities, towns, local events and people to chronical life along this interior corridor of the American west. The exhibition will travel to as many venues as can be arranged along and near US 89.

LARGE-FORMAT PHOTOGRAPHY BOOK
In conjunction with the exhibition, a large format book of the landscape photographs along with descriptive text will be published. The book’s structure will be based on the geographic provinces through which the road passes and will lead the reader on a journey of discovery from Mexico to Canada. While the seven National Parks on US Route 89 will naturally be featured, less well-known parks, monuments and historic sites will also be represented.

TRAVELER’S FIELD GUIDE
The ultimate traveler’s field guide to US Route 89 is also in the works. This book will detail the geography, geology, natural history and human history along the highway. The field guide’s structure will be based on the four geographic provinces through which the road passes and will be broken down into 19 segments beginning and ending in a town or city. A traveler will be able to gain a general understanding of the geography, history and culture of the West and then delve into specific details about each particular section of the road.

ALONG 89 EMAIL NEWSLETTER
Concurrent with the photographic fieldwork, I am sending out a free email newsletter. Subscribers receive information on the many special and unique places to visit along 89 and well as notes on the history, geography and culture of the American West. Topics so far have ranged from the role of black entrepreneurial women in the development of the west to unique holiday shopping opportunities.

US ROUTE 89 APPRECIATION SOCIETY WEBSITE
This website will provide information for residents and travelers on places to visit and current events along US Route 89. Anyone who registers on the website will be able to contribute stories and photographs about the highway. It is hoped that www.us89society.org will grow into a social network of people based on a common interested in US Route 89.

PROJECT SPONSORSHIP
Between four and five million people live in towns and cities along Route 89. Over sixteen million people visit the seven National Parks. Several non-profit cultural organizations including the Grand Canyon Association and the Desert Caballeros Western Museum have shown support for the project by joining the US Route 89 Appreciation Society. The law firm of Snell & Wilmer with offices in Tucson, Phoenix and Salt Lake City is the first corporate sponsor. Individuals, businesses, civic, tourism and cultural organizations recognize the relevance of this project to the appreciation of the scenic wonders and historic importance of US Route 89.
