Distance: 124 miles • Elevation Change: Great Falls 3330 ft.-Browning 4376 ft. From Great Falls to Browning, Montana, US Route 89 is in the Great Plains on the eastern front of the Rocky Mountains. To follow 89 through Great Falls stay on 10th Avenue South until it crosses the Missouri River and merges onto I-315. Take the exit for I-15 North and then exit the Interstate at Vaughn (Exit 290). This road is Montana Route 200 to Sun River where highway 89 turns north to Browning. Special Attractions: Lewis & Clark National Historic Trail Interpretive Center: Overlooking the Missouri River in Great Falls, the center depicts the history of Lewis & Clark expedition through film, dioramas and interactive displays. Giant Springs Heritage State Park: Giant Springs on the Missouri River in Great Falls is one the world’s largest freshwater springs flowing at a rate of 156 million gallons of water per day. Visitor will also enjoy the world’s shortest river and access to the Rivers Edge Trail. C. M. Russell Museum: The largest collection of work by the famous western artist, Charles M. Russell, is housed in this museum in Great Falls. Also on the grounds and open to visitors are the 1900 home of Charlie and Nancy Russell and the artist’s log cabin studio. Old Trail Museum: The exhibits in this unique museum in Choteau cover the natural and cultural history of the Rocky Mountain Front from the age of the dinosaurs to the present day. Two Medicine Dinosaur Center: See a life-size skeletal model of the world’s largest dinosaur at this educational center in Bynum. Also on display are the fossilized remains of a dinosaur nest that transformed the understanding of dinosaur social behavior. The center also offers hands-on opportunities to participate in research projects.
