The most northern section of US Route 89 runs close to the mountains and provides access to the east side of Glacier National Park. Glacier National Park is connected to Waterton Lakes National Park in Canada. The two parks were designated as the first International Peace Park and are also a World Heritage Site. To visit Waterton Lakes, turn off US 89 on to the Chief Mountain International Highway and cross the Canadian border to the Waterton Lakes entrance station. Be sure to have a valid passport to enter Canada and return to the US.

Waterton-Glacier International Peace Park: Waterton Lakes National Park in Canada was established in 1895 and the adjoining Glacier National Park in the USA in 1910. In 1932 the two parks were linked as the world’s first International Peace Park. The parks are renowned for their glacier-carved mountains and deep lakes. Here at the narrowest point in the Rocky Mountains, ecosystems from the Pacific Northwest, the northern forests and the Great Plains converge to form a unique community of plants and animals found no where else in North America. The park is one of the many features included in the Crown of the Continent Geotourism area, a joint effort of the National Geographic Society and the people of British Columbia, Alberta and Montana.
