Distance:94.8 miles • Elevation Change: Brigham City 4435 ft.-Montpelier 5984 ft. At Brigham City, US Route 89 begins its traverse of the Rocky Mountains. The first stretch climbs through the Wellsville Mountains into the Cache Valley to Logan. From there highway 89 enters Logan Canyon in the Bear River Range. This section is designated as a National Scenic Byway. It tops out at Bear Lake Summit after a climb of 3,275 feet. The road winds down the mountain to the shore of Bear Lake where it enters Idaho and crosses a broad valley north of the lake to Montpelier.
Special Attractions: Logan Canyon: Cutting through the Bear River Mountains, Logan Canyon presents many recreational opportunities from rock climbing, hiking and camping to snowmobiling and skiing. US Route 89 through the canyon has been designated as a National Scenic Byway. The highway follows the Logan River through most of the canyon. Bear Lake: On the Utah-Idaho border, Bear Lake is a natural fresh-water lake which has been called the “Caribbean of the Rockies” because of its turquoise-blue color. The lake is a popular destination for sportsman and tourists with numerous recreation opportunities. The area is also known for its high-quality raspberries and the annual Raspberry Days celebration in August.
