At Moark Junction at the mouth of Spanish Fork Canyon, US Route 89 turns north. Basically, 89 is the main street of the Salt Lake Valley running through its many towns and cities. If you stay on Main Street or State Street and watch for the 89 federal highway shield, you can’t go too far wrong. Occasionally, US Route 89 will become part of Interstate 15 and then veer off again.
Special Attractions:
Temple Square: No visit to Salt Lake City is complete without taking the time to walk around in Temple Square, the world headquarters of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. Take a garden tour, visit Brigham Young's home and have lunch or dinner at the the Lion House Pantry. If you happen to be there on a Thursday, go to the Tabernacle to listen to the world famous Mormon Tabernacle Choir rehearse. Over 2,000 special events are held throughout the year so there is always something to do at Temple Square.
Utah Museum of Fine Arts: Located on the campus of the University of Utah in Salt Lake City, the museum's permanent collection ranges for Egyptian Antiquities to contemporary art of the American West. Highlights of the Collection Tours are conducted several times a day as well as special programs related to the current changing exhibition.
Antelope Island State Park: To experience the Great Salt Lake, visit Antelope Island north of Salt Lake City. This state park offers many recreation opportunities including swimming in the lake which is three times saltier than the ocean. It is also a great place for wildlife viewing and is most famous for its herd of American Bison and, of course, antelopes. The island can be reached by driving across a seven-mile long causeway west of Layton.
